It has spent time as an asbestos factory and a wood workshop, amongst other things. It has been much altered as a result. The building is in a state of flux, and of this we took advantage, used the opportunity to open the building up. We stripped away everything of no heritage value: defunct cabling and pipework, poorly constructed apartment walls, removed all floorboards to inspect for rot. What was left was an empty shell.The intervention becomes a bridge with a dual function. An access platform for public viewing, plus a structural member pinning together the existing floor joists, now that the structural floorboards are (temporarily) gone. I used salvaged bricks to borrow some of their heat (a thermal battery) and transfer it into a pair of new steel benches. On the opening of the exhibition we toured the benches through the town as the steel slowly took up heat from the bricks. Formerly part of a the entrance hall to a school, the studio required more enclosure and privacy, whilst still allowing daylight into the adjacent hallway.A beam with a metal post spans the large opening, from which everything else either hangs or rests upon. The structure integrates two existing curved walls leftover from the building's Vrijeschool (Steiner school) history.The setback of the doors allows a mezzanine to be introduced within the studio itself. Finally, a small vitrine allows the ever-changing resident artists to display a small object to the hallway. It is so certain of its past but knows nothing of its future. In the neighborhood of La Salut in Gràcia, Barcelona, the pioneering 1930 rationalist house by Sixte Illescas awaits judgement. In what feels like an unfulfilling function for a work of such historical significance, the shabby glamour of the rooms, which currently serve as a hotel, feel like they can offer us more.The residency in Casa Vilaró was undertaken following the invitation by Fundació Mies van der Rohe.
